THE HISTORY OF ST. ALBAN
St. Alban is the first British martyr and is traditionally associated
with the Diocletianic persecutions (c.305). Born a pagan in Hertfordshire,
he was converted and baptized by a priest to whom he had offered shelter.
When the governor sent soldiers to search his house, he disguised himself
in the priest's cloak, was arrested and condemned to martyrdom. His shrine
still stands in St. Alban's Abbey.
